Update 2014 March 19

Yesterday had some wonderful examples of the "get a lead and then hold on for dear life". Carolina had two missed shots and no shots-on-goal in the third period against columbus, a game which they won with 23% of the puck, among the lowest all season. Florida got out to 3-1 lead after two relatively even periods against San Jose and then went into a shell like never seen before. In the third period alone Luongo made 28 saves on 29 shots to preserve the win. The fenwick chart from extra skater really shows it properly:
The bets looks pretty decent for today, nothing especially outlandish.

Playoff Chances

East

Obvious story is the incredibly surging flyers, who hit five posts against Chicago before finally winning in overtime; they beat Pittsburgh twice over the weekend and all of a sudden they seem unbeatable. New Jersey really need to play their best goaltender more. Senators drop under 10% for the first time all year, they join the Canucks and the Jets in the realm of "must win all but two of their remaining games" to have a 50/50 chance of the playoffs.

Points after elimination

Boston are very, very close to clinching a spot; one or two more points will do it. St Louis are just as close, any two results drawn from {St Louis Win, Dallas Loss} will do the trick.

  1. In fact St Louis are even closer than I realized to clinching -- If they win tonight, they will clinch, since *both* Phoenix and Dallas need to win out to knock St Louis into 9th, and they can't do that since they play one another once more. So, any St Louis win, or a Dallas loss combined with a Phoenix loss, will do the trick.
